Portuguese Sheepdog Overview

The Portuguese Sheepdog has either a short or long-haired coat with a light wave. The typical coat colour usually varies from yellow and red chestnut, fawn, grey or black. They normally have a few white patches of hair on their chest.

This dog breed is a medium-sized dog with strong legs and deep chest. They grow to a height of 16-22 inches and weigh in the region of 26-40 pounds.

The Portuguese Sheepdog is a high spirited dog breed with bundles of energy. They really suit a family that equally loves to be active and spend a lot of time outside on various walks and adventures. They’re very loyal and can be possessive over their owners, so training from a young age on obedience is a must.

History & Origin

The Portugues sheepdog dates back to almost 100 years and is believed to have been developed in the Southern regions of Portugal. History dictates that the Portuguese Sheepdog defended from the Briards that were imported to Portugal BY count de Castro Guimaraes. 


Portuguese Sheepdog Temperament

The Portuguese Sheepdog is loyal to their loved ones and always willing to learn and be talked with work to complete. They bond very closely with their family but can be suspicious of strangers. 

They tend to get on very well with children of all ages and would make an ideal companion to a family with children. 


Portuguese Sheepdog Training

The Portuguese Sheepdog are easy to train using positive reinforcement. Training should start at an early age and continue throughout their lives. They have strong herding instincts and should be kept on a lead whilst out walking. 

 

Grooming

The Portuguese Sheepdog requires moderate levels of grooming. To help keep their coat in the optimum condition they should be bathed frequently with specialist dog shampoo and conditioner. They also require daily brushing to keep their coat from becoming matted and tangled. 

As with all dog breeds, they need regular teeth brushing, nail clipping and cleaning of their ears and eyes. 

Health

The Portuguese Sheepdog is generally very healthy provided they have been bred responsibly by their breeders. They are predisposed to a few health concerns such as hip dysplasia and eye problems. 

Portuguese Sheepdog Exercise Needs

The Portuguese Sheepdog requires plenty of exercise and time spent outdoors in the garden. They need to be taken for serval walks a day, preferably on their lead or let off their lead if you're in a secluded and fenced off area. 

They excel in agility, hiking long walks and exploring. They're very active and would suit a family that equally love the outdoors and exercise. 

Children and other pets

The Portuguese Sheepdog tends to get on very well with children of all ages because of their very loving and enjoy playing. Playtime should always be supervised by a responsible adult to prevent rough play. 

The Portuguese Sheepdog isn't suitable for living with other small household pets because of their high prey drive.
