Lakeland Terrier Overview

This dog was named from their place of origin; the Lake District, England. They're small and medium sized and are part of the terrier family. They're a hypoallergenic dog breed, so would suit a family that suffers with allergens.

They're bold, friendly, intelligent and confident. The Lakeland Terrier is easy to train and requires plenty of it. They can become easily bored, so will need lots of mental stimulation.

The Lakeland Terrier comes in a variety of colours, such as Black & Tan, Black, Red, Blue and Wheaten.

Both Male and Female weight relatively the same, 7-8kg and their height is between 33-38cm.

History & Origin

The Lakeland Terrier originates from the 1700s and was named after the Lake District. This dog breed is believed to be one of the oldest modern Terrier breeds and a descendant of the old English Black and Tan Terriers. 

Lakeland Terrier Temperament

The Lakeland Terrier is a fearless dog breed and bred to guard. This delightful dog breed has excellent eyesight and hearing which makes them excellent watchdogs. The Lakeland Terrier has a high prey-drive and will help keep your home rodent-free. 

Lakeland Terrier Training

The Lakeland Terrier is an intelligent dog breed learns very quickly, which makes training easier. However, this dog breed does need strong leadership as they can be very stubborn and therefore not suitable for a first-time dog owner. Training must start during the puppy stage and should be consistent throughout their lives.

Grooming

The Lakeland Terrier rates high in maintenance for grooming. They require lots of time and dedication to look after their coats. Weekly brushing is necessary as well as daily cleaning of their beard. Their coat should be clipped every few months and their teeth, paws and ears cleaned on a regular basis.

Health

The Lakeland Terrier is generally a healthy dog breed but as with the majority of dog breeds, they're predisposed to a few hereditary health issues such as:

  • Elbow dysplasia
  • lens luxation
  • Cataracts
  • Thyroid problems
  • Legg-Perthes




 

Lakeland Terrier Exercise Needs

The Lakeland Terrier requires plenty of exercise on a daily basis. They need as much time off their lead as possible and provided a secure area where they can run and play. daily exercise should be for a minimum of 60 minutes a day to help keep them fit, healthy and well-balanced. 

Children and other pets

The Lakeland Terrier is great with older children and wouldn't suit a family with young children, as they do like to play a bit rough and therefore wouldn't suit a small child. Please note playtime should always be supervised. 

the Lakeland Terrier has a high prey-drive and therefore isn't suitable to live with other small pets, as they have a tendency to attack smaller animals.
